Winnipeg moving ahead with granite curling club lease termination amid ongoing talks

The City of Winnipeg is ending its lease with the Granite Curling Club this summer, as plans move ahead for Granite Riverside Commons.

The City of Winnipeg says discussions with the Granite Curling Club are continuing despite plans to terminate the club’s lease later this summer as part of a proposed affordable housing development.

The city confirmed the current lease for the Granite Curling Club will expire July 31 after a 90-day notice was issued on April 30. The move comes as plans advance for Granite Riverside Commons, a proposed 111-unit affordable housing project beside the historic rink.

The curling club has previously raised concerns about losing parking access, arguing it could threaten the facility’s long-term viability. The city says it has offered to replace 50 of the 60 parking stalls expected to be lost through redevelopment, along with establishing a capital reserve fund for the rink.

Last year, the Granite Curling Club filed an application in Manitoba’s Court of King’s Bench related to parking requirements tied to the project. A hearing is scheduled for June 9.

Mayor Scott Gillingham said Monday that conversations between city staff and the club remain ongoing.

“We continue to talk to the Granite about what can be done to accommodate the needs that are there,” Gillingham said. “Our staff has been in conversation with the Granite about their parking needs and what could be done to accommodate both housing and the Granite Curling Club.”

The Granite Curling Club declined to comment, citing the ongoing court proceedings.
