AMC honours Mary Simon as tenure comes to an end

The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) is recognizing the legacy of Mary Simon as she concludes her time as Canada’s first Indigenous Governor General.

AMC says Simon helped bring greater focus to reconciliation, Indigenous languages and the lasting impacts of residential schools during her tenure.

Grand Chief Kyra Wilson says Simon led with humility and integrity while helping reshape conversations around Crown–First Nations relations.

“She spoke her language, and you could very well hear and see her strong advocacy for those Indigenous languages in the Canadian context,” said Grand Chief Wilson.

AMC also congratulated Louise Arbour on her appointment as Canada’s next Governor General.

“She’s had a career focused on human rights and international law, and also accountability within public institutions, which I think is a beautiful experience and education to bring forward in this role.”
