Teen charged after allegedly assaulting cab driver

Winnipeg police say a 17-year-old has been charged with allegedly assaulting a taxi cab driver.

WPS says just after midnight, a teen reportedly went to a hotel parking lot along the Pembina Highway near Oakenwald Avenue and approached a taxi.

It is believed the teen got into a verbal argument with the cab driver for an unknown reason. That argument reportedly escalated to a point where the cab driver was allegedly punched through an open window.

Police then say that as the driver stepped out of the cab, the teen allegedly pulled out a knife and chased the driver around the parking lot, before fleeing on foot, and the driver was not injured during the incident.

Around 12:47 a.m., the teen reportedly returned to the area, at which point they were taken into custody by police. While in custody, officers were able to find and seize a combat-style knife.

The 17-year-old has since been charged with assault with a weapon, assault, possession of a weapon, and failing to comply with a probation order.

Police note that the teen was also arrested on the strength of two warrants for assault with a weapon, uttering threats, and failing to comply with a sentence.
