IIU looking into claimed that Winnipeg officer allegedly assaulted a man

Manitoba’s police watchdog is looking into a complaint regarding an alleged assault following an arrest in Winnipeg on New Year’s Day.

The IIU says on March 11, they were notified of an incident that happened around 3 a.m. on Jan. 1 at the Winnipeg police headquarters.

The complaint claims that during an interaction between a man and a police officer, the officer allegedly assaulted the man.

The IIU says that “the affected person reported the incident to the WPS Professional Standards Unit on Jan. 28. The investigation was held in abeyance pending the affected person’s decision on whether to proceed.”
