What started as a father-son trip to watch the Blue Bombers in 1959 became a lifelong tradition. Now, more than 70 years later, Fred Morris is still cheering on the team he grew up loving, proving some traditions never fade.

Morris, who says he is one of the many thousands of Blue Bombers superfans, has been following the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from home games to away games.

It all started when his father took him to a Blue Bombers game in September of 1959 when he was eight, which he says started his love for the team. He even remembered where they sat — the north end zone of the Winnipeg Stadium, which is no longer here.

“It was a very memorable game, 41-14, and those days Saskatchewan wasn’t very good. In fact, the Bombers had beaten them 61-8 in Regina a few weeks before, and ever since then I went to games just about every year, and in 2006 I became a season ticket holder,” said Morris.

Starting in 2006, Morris didn’t miss a home game, then added away games in Calgary in 2012.

“After they won the two cups, I decided, well, in a short period of time I want to see them in every other stadium in the country, and it started in 2023 in Regina, Labour Day Classic,” said Morris.

In 2023, he then started taking his fandom to the next level, adding stops in Regina, then in 2024 heading to Montreal and Vancouver and last year all the way to Toronto, Hamilton and Edmonton. His goal this season is to finish up with Calgary and Ottawa

If you ask Morris the score to any game, bet he will tell you.

“It’s been very enjoyable, and I guess in one way the Montreal game is very memorable because that was one that looked as if they were defeated and then the wind suddenly changed directions the last minute of the game and Castillo hit the 51 yard field goal and I got back to Winnipeg and people thought I changed the win but it really wasn’t the case,” he explained.

Morris will be packing up to head to the Bombers’ next game in Calgary and has high hopes for the Bombers this season.

“Play hard every game and play entertaining.”
