All-Canadian bus manufacturing facility opens in Winnipeg

All three branches of government announce the opening of an all-Canadian bus manufacturing facility in Winnipeg on Tuesday. Our Koby Mitchell reports.

To create more jobs and bolster Manitoba’s economy in technology and zero emissions, all three levels of government announced the opening of an all-Canadian bus manufacturing facility in Winnipeg.

“This marks a defining moment in Canadian manufacturing. As Paul mentioned for the first time in over 15 years, transit buses are being built by Canadians, for Canadians and manufactured right here at home, from start to finish,” said Ginette Lavack, the parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Indigenous Services.

Melanie Joly, the federal Minister of Industry, said, “We know that in times of hardship, Canadians roll up their sleeves, and we are able to build back and build back strong. And what has happened here is an example of building Canada strong.”

In October of 2024, New Flyer announced the expansion after securing $38 million from both the federal and provincial governments.

Newly appointed president and CEO of NFI Group, John Sapp, spoke about how this project is about more than just buses.

“It isn’t just about supporting mass transit and the mission that we have every single day. But it’s around our mission of environmental progress. Our mission of connectivity. Of workforce mobility. That mission of bringing people together safely is something I’ve spent my entire career doing,” said Sapp.

The project is creating 250 direct jobs and hundreds of additional indirect jobs.

NFI’s global headquarters is in Winnipeg and employs nearly 3,000 Manitobans. The manufacturers’ buses are currently used in Winnipeg and in various cities across the country.

“Today is all about showing that Manitoba can be a leader. During this historical moment, where Canada’s economy is under threat. And that is a story that I’m super proud of. And I’m proud of it because of all of you, the blue-collar folks who make this a success,” said Premier Wab Kinew.

As of right now, New Flyer is building around 20 transit bus shells a week, with five being finished for Canadian destinations, and 15 heading to the U.S.
