6-year-old killed by vehicle backing up in parking lot on northern Manitoba First Nation

Police say a six-year-old boy is dead after being hit by a vehicle that was backing up in a store parking lot on a northern Manitoba First Nation on Friday afternoon.

RCMP say it happened around 4:45 p.m. on the Shamattawa First Nation.

The child was taken by the driver to the nursing station, where he died of his injuries.

Authorities say after speaking with witnesses at the scene, it appears several children were attempting to hang on to the bumpers of moving vehicles “in an attempt to slide on the snow.”

Shamattawa RCMP is continuing to investigate.
