Chāpān Games and Teachings event held at the Forks

The Chāpān Games and Teachings event took place on Sunday at the CN Stage at the Forks, in the lead up to Truth and Reconciliation Day this week.

The event focuses on the Chāpān Circle of Elders healing through the medicine of laughter and having fun with traditional Indigenous games.

Folks enjoyed storytelling, drum circles and dancing, food trucks, arts and crafts, as well as a sacred fire and a grand entry.

The meaning behind the Cree word Chāpān means Grandparents or Great-Grandparents and refers to the traditional role of the elderly as well as youth in families, especially when everyone in the community left every summer to go hunting and fishing at the family camps.
