Winnipeg police say around $2.2 million in drugs were seized over the course of an investigation that began in April.
During the investigation, police say they identified a man who was allegedly trafficking illicit drugs in the city. Investigators say they identified three homes of interest believed to be connected.
Police allege the man attempted to ship a kilogram of cocaine through the mail. The drugs were intercepted and seized. It is also believed the drugs were to be shipped to different parts of Manitoba.
On May 15, the suspect was taken into custody while leaving a home on La Verendrye Street.
Later that day, search warrants were executed at the home, as well as one on Noble Avenue and another on Mapleglen Drive.
During the searches, police say they seized 43 kilograms of methamphetamine, 1,968 grams of cocaine, $150,000 in Canadian cash, scales, a vacuum sealer, packaging material, and other drug-related items.
“This is I think a significant seizure. Unfortunately, it’s been one of the larger seizures but many that we’ve had this year,” said Josh Ewatski, the WPS organized crime unit divisional commander.
“Drugs are still readily available in the city and the organized crime unit is putting a big dent in how much people who are using the stuff or who are selling it can access.”
George David MacFarlane, 49, has been charged with possession of a scheduled substance for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds obtained by a crime over $5,000.
Police have confirmed MacFarlane was previously known to them. He has been released on an undertaking.
None of the allegations have been tested in court.
