Man allegedly abusing dog assaults officer during arrest: Winnipeg police

Police say a 46-year-old Winnipeg man who was allegedly abusing a dog downtown is accused of assaulting an off-duty police officer during his arrest.

The Winnipeg Police Service alleges the man was abusing a large-breed dog on Assiniboine Avenue near the Midtown Bridge on Tuesday around 3:15 p.m.

Authorities say several bystanders had gathered and were attempting to intervene to stop the abuse.

An off-duty police officer, who authorities say identified himself as an officer, observed the interaction and attempted to take the suspect into custody with the help of a witness, according to the WPS.

“The suspect refused to comply, attempted to kick the officer, made threats of bodily harm, and bit him in the upper body,” police said in a news release. “Central district general patrol officers attended to assist and arrested the suspect, who continued to resist.”

The suspect is facing charges for assaulting, resisting and obstructing a peace officer; and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.
