February is Black History Month, a time to commemorate the achievements and contributions of black excellence across Canada. Friday, the Manitoba government announced $1.2 million in funding to support Black-led businesses across the province.

“Bringing people together. Right? Bringing people together. We are one province, one people. We are one community. We are one Manitoba. That means something,” said Uzoma Asagwara, deputy premier.

Jamie Moses, Minister of Business, Mining, Trade, and Job Creation, said, “We know that our Black history extends in Manitoba for generations, for centuries, quite frankly. And we know that it’s important to us to work together. To understand that the struggle we face together is something that’s rooted in hope. Something that’s rooted in us overcoming. Every struggle is rooted in that belief that we will overcome it and we will have a better community tomorrow.”

Part of their investment will include $100,000 towards hosting the fifth National Black Canadians Summit in September of 2026, and $40,000 in new relief funding for families in Jamaica impacted by Hurricane Melissa.

“It’s in times like these when you know who your allies and friends are. So, when the hurricane hit, Manitobans pulled together. And we want to say thank you so much. For your support. You responded in a big way,” said Lois Stewart Archer, a Jamaican Honorary Consulate in Winnipeg.

This year, Manitoba is celebrating its 45th Black History Month, and on Friday, the legislature was packed with performances from local legends.

“Part of the celebration of Black history and Black excellence is to send a message to the younger generation that the road to the top is open. It has been paved by the sacrifices of those who came before us. But now the legacy is happiness, joy, and fulfillment for you,” said Premier Wab Kinew.

Black History Manitoba will be hosting a variety of events throughout the rest of the month with a goal of educating Manitobans about Black history’s vital role in Canada. A full list of their planned events is available online.
