3 injured as house was destroyed by evening fire in Winnipeg’s West Broadway neighbourhood

A man is dead and two other people, including a firefighter, were taken to hospital following a massive blaze at a West Broadway home in Winnipeg on Thursday. Morgan Modjeski reports.

Three people, including a firefighter, were taken to hospital following an evening fire in Winnipeg’s West Broadway neighbourhood.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services responded to a report of a fire in a two-and-a-half storey house around 5:35 p.m. near Young Street and Broadway, and when they arrived at the scene, they could see heavy black smoke coming from the building.

One person was rescued from the home by firefighters, while everyone else within the home was able to self-evacuate. Officials note that one person was taken to hospital in critical condition, a second person was taken to hospital in stable condition, and a firefighter was injured at the scene and was also taken to hospital in stable condition.

Fire crews were able to declare the fire under control at 6:22 p.m.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway, and at this time, there are no damage estimates.
