Manitoba RCMP say a 54-year-old woman is in hospital after being shot by an officer east of Brandon.
Around 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Mounties from Carberry responded to reports that someone was causing a disturbance on the Trans-Canada Highway near Road 88 West, by walking in and out of traffic.
When officers arrived, they say they found a woman acting erratically and climbing on vehicles. They allege she had an edged weapon.
The Mounties reportedly tried to de-escalate the situation, however, they were ignored by the woman. This continued until a Mountie tried to approach the woman, at which point she allegedly turned and started to approach the officer, causing the officer to fire their weapon.
The woman was hit by the shot, and officers provided medical care until paramedics arrived and took her to hospital in stable condition.
Manitoba’s Independent Investigation Unit has been informed of the incident and has begun an investigation, which will include reviewing the officer’s body camera footage.
Manitoba RCMP will also be conducting its own investigation into the initial incident.
