IIU finds Mountie not responsible for fatal collision last summer

Manitoba’s police watchdog — the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) — says it has ended its investigation into a fatal collision on Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 190 following an attempted traffic stop last summer.

The IIU says on Jul. 31, 2024, they were notified of a collision that occurred that afternoon.

It is believed an officer tried to conduct a traffic stop after noticing a Honda Civic driving around 107 km/h on PTH 190 or CentrePort Canada Way. The speed limit was 70 km/h.

After the officer activated emergency lights, authorities say the Civic accelerated and ran a red light at CentrePort Canada Way and Sturgeon Road, at which point it collided with a semi-truck.

A woman who was in the passenger seat of the Civic was taken to a hospital in Winnipeg, where she died.

The investigation determined there was no evidence the officer had caused the woman’s death.
