Winnipeg man arrested after biting police officer

A 41-year-old Winnipeg man was arrested after allegedly biting an officer during his arrest early Saturday morning.

Around 1:11 a.m., Winnipeg police pulled over a taxi near Dufferin Avenue and Salter Street for an unrelated matter.

Before officers could approach the vehicle, they said the suspect, who was a passenger, fled on foot. Officers said they chased the man and tried to arrest him.

Police said the suspect resisted arrest and bit one of the officers. Police said they then used a taser to bring the situation under control.

The suspect was treated at the scene, while the officer was taken to hospital with minor injuries and was later released.

Officers said they found around 14 grams of cocaine with an estimated street value of $1,380, as well as $200 cash on the suspect. Police also said there were three outstanding warrants for his arrest.

The 41-year-old man is facing charges for assaulting and resisting a peace officer, as well as possessing proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000. He also faces two counts of possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
