The opening of Portage and Main to pedestrians is entering into a new phase.
The concrete barriers that once blocked pedestrians from entering the city’s best-known intersection have now been removed completely, according to a news release from the City of Winnipeg.
Residents can expect to see fencing in place at all four corners of the intersection as crews now work to complete underground utility work.
“The project is on time, on budget, and traffic is still moving well through the intersection. I want to recognize MD Steele Construction for their hard work and thank Winnipeggers for their patience as we make this long-awaited change,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham in the news release.
“I’m looking forward to the intersection reopening to pedestrians alongside the launch of our new transit network as both are important steps toward a more connected and accessible downtown.”

The City of Winnipeg stressed that lane closures will be in place for those continuing to navigate the intersection and will remain unchanged until the newly started phase of work has finished.
However, in April lane changes at the intersection are coming as work to rebuild the centre mediums and other utility adjustments begin.
Those looking for more information on the intersection’s opening and the associated timelines can visit the City of Winnipeg’s website, with the opening of the intersection slated for July 1, 2025.
