Police arrest man in pair of West Kildonan arsons

By News Staff

A Winnipeg man is accused of starting two fires in West Kildonan on Wednesday night, including one in a business’ unlocked refuse room.

The Winnipeg Police Service alleges the suspect entered the business on McPhillips Street and “set a pile of carboard on fire” in the refuse room. The fire was extinguished by the WFPS. Damage was assessed at approximately $10,000.

Investigators believe the man then set a nearby garbage bin on fire near a commercial business on Leila Avenue; authorities say that resulted in about $5,000 worth of damage.

No injuries were reported as a result of either fire.

Officers observed the Leila Avenue blaze around 11:15 p.m., contacted WFPS, and located a suspect on McPhillips. Police allege they found a blue lighter on his person during the arrest, and approximately nine grams of methamphetamine.

Winnipeg’s Ronald Marmito Amigo, 46, is facing several charges including two counts of arson causing property damage and possession of meth. He was detained in custody.
