Man killed after being shot by RCMP officer in southern Manitoba

Manitoba’s police watchdog — the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) — is investigating after an officer fatally shot a man in Dominion City on Tuesday morning.

The IIU says they were notified of the incident by RCMP around 8:31 a.m. after Mounties reportedly responded to a wellness check in Dominion City, which is located around 75 km south of Winnipeg.

Reports indicate while Mounties were waiting for backup to arrive, they were approached by a man who was carrying a metal object in his hand.

Officers reportedly told the man to drop the item, but he continued to approach the officers, at which point an officer fired their service weapon, hitting the man.

Police say the officer then began CPR until paramedics arrived and took over, before taking the man to hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

The IIU was then notified and has begun an investigation.

Anyone who may have any information regarding the fatal shooting is asked to contact investigators at 1-844-667-6060.
