Winnipeg philanthropist, businessman John Buhler dead at 91

Well-known Winnipeg philanthropist and businessman John Buhler has passed away.

Buhler died at the age of 91 Sunday at a Winnipeg care facility. He donated generously to numerous organizations and institutions after purchasing Standard Gas Engine Works in 1969, which would eventually become Buhler Industries.

Over the course of his life, Buhler and his wife Bonnie made significant contributions across Manitoba, including to the Buhler Gallery, the St. Boniface Hospital and the Buhler Cancer Centre at Victoria Hospital.

One of the largest donations made by the family went towards the opening of the Buhler Centre at the University of Winnipeg, now home to the Faculty of Business and Economics.

He’s being remembered by many across Manitoba. In a statement, Winnipeg’s top elected official Mayor Scott Gillingham acknowledged their work, saying both Buhler and his wife Bonnie made a massive difference in the city, “profoundly” shaping Winnipeg while inspiring countless others to give back.

“John Buhler will be greatly missed, but his legacy will continue to enrich the lives of all Winnipeggers,” Gillingham said.

The University of Manitoba said Buhler’s legacy “will resonate for generations.”

“His generosity and dedication to making Manitoba a better place will continue to inspire us all,” the university wrote.

A private service for Buhler’s family is scheduled.
