Winnipeg extreme cold: 211 call could ‘save someone’s life’

As temperatures drop in Winnipeg, creating potentially fatal conditions, residents are reminded to call 211 if they encounter someone who is struggling with the freezing cold.
“A quick call to 211 could save someone’s life,” said Tammy Reimer with 211 Manitoba in a news release. “If you see someone struggling in the cold and you don’t know what to do, call 211.”
The person on the other end of the line has access to dozens of available resources, and the service is connected to a real person 24/7.
An extreme cold warning has been put in effect by Environment Canada for Winnipeg as the wind chill is making it feel like – 40 C, creating a very real risk of frostbite in minutes.
Reimer explained a call to 211 will help address the risks of extreme cold for a person in need, as an outreach team in the area will be contacted and asked to assist; the Main Street Project and the Downtown Community Safety Partnership are just some of the many partners involved.
“211 is a simple tool for Winnipeggers to take action when they witness a neighbour in need,” she said. “Caring for our community can look like a call to 211 – we are here to help.”
The extreme cold warning in effect for Winnipeg indicates the cold will stick around until at least Friday morning.
