One of Canada’s leading consumer watchdogs is cautioning the public that the flashy ads for cheap holiday cheer on social media may come with a big price tag.
People across the province are already getting into the holiday spirit, but the Better Business Bureau is warning residents to make a list and check it twice when it comes to ordering decorations, as there’s an increasing number of “decoration scams” being reported.
“The holiday decoration scam is variable, but often fools its victims with photos of large, professional-looking displays, only to deliver something small and poorly made – or nothing at all,” said a warning from the BBB.
It went on to explain that those who have social media feeds filled with holiday ideas may be particularly vulnerable, as from there, they’ll click on an enticing-looking ad, reviews included, but it’s all fake.
Once the scammers have payment information, the BBB says they’ll overcharge customers, sell their personal information, or simply deliver something that doesn’t match the description as advertised.
However, customers can take little action when it comes to reaching the business to get their money back.
To prevent yourself from becoming a victim of a seasonal scam like this, the BBB is advising residents to take several steps to protect themselves, including checking third-party sources before making a purchase, beware of high-value items at low prices, and avoiding purchasing something directly from social media.
The BBB also advised residents to make online purchases with a credit card, as a credit card company may let you dispute charges, noting the fact a business does not take a credit card may be a red flag in itself.
Manitobans can use the BBB’s Scam Tracker to get more information on decoration scams and other scams circulating in the province.
