Blue Bombers sell out Princess Auto Stadium for CFL Western Final

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers prepare to face one of their fiercest rivals, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, for the highly anticipated Western Finals matchup. Mitchell Ringos reports.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are preparing for what could be a Western Final matchup to remember — and it’ll happen in front of a packed stadium.

The Blue Bombers will face one of their fiercest rivals, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, at Princess Auto Stadium on Saturday in front of a sellout crowd, the team announced.

“It’s two good football teams that are well coached and execute well and deserve to be in this position,” said Buck Pierce, the Bombers offensive coordinator.

After a freak wind gust against the Montreal Alouettes led to a game-winning field goal to clinch the West for the Bombers, Winnipeg has been using the bye week to prepare for their rivalry match against the Roughriders.

Winnipeg is looking to book a spot in its fifth consecutive Grey Cup.

While the team is confident going into the game, they are expecting a battle against the Roughriders, who are ranked among the league’s best defensive teams.

“This is a good football team and offensively we look at it as we need to play our best,” said Pierce.

This will mark the teams’ fourth meeting of the season, with Winnipeg winning the last three. However, the Bombers are going into this game with a fresh slate, as Saskatchewan has forced 26 more turnovers this season.

“They’re playing well together, you can see them talk and communicate, so for us we need to make sure we play clean, and we play smart,” said Pierce.

Wide receiver Nic Demski, who scored a key touchdown against Montreal to get them to the West Final, says the team is prepared for Saturday and they will have an advantage playing at home in front of a sold-out crowd.

“The fans and how loud they are and how much cheering they do will keep them off their game,” said Demski.

“Every week we come in and a goal of ours is ball security, but of course we put a lot more emphasis on it this week.”

A win for the Roughriders would clinch Saskatchewan’s first Grey Cup appearance since 2013.
