‘Whiteout’ conditions expected for downtown Winnipeg: Environment Canada

With the start of the Stanley Cup playoffs just around the corner, local businesses are hoping for a deep run from the Winnipeg Jets. Kurt Black reports.

Even Canada’s weather authority is getting swept up in the excitement of playoff hockey.

Environment Canada issued a playful notice for Winnipeg Sunday, on Game 1 of the Jets’ opening-round post-season matchup against the Colorado Avalanche.

In addition to forecasting temperatures in the mid-teens, southwesterly winds and clear skies, Environment Canada predicted “localized whiteout conditions… in the vicinity of downtown Winnipeg.”

It’s of course a cheeky reference to Winnipeg’s famous Whiteout Street parties, where thousands of fans gather in downtown for home playoff games.
