IIU looking to speak to potential witness of in-custody death

Manitoba’s police watchdog — the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) — says it’s continuing to investigate an in-custody death that took place on Oct. 15, 2023.

Around 10:50 p.m., Winnipeg police officers responded to the area of Broadway and Sherbrook Street after receiving a report that a man was in distress and running into traffic.

When officers arrived, they found the man and took him into custody.

The man then went into medical distress and was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he was later declared dead, police say.

Indigenous leaders, family members call for answers, justice in death of Elias Whitehead in Winnipeg

Indigenous leaders are now calling for answers and justice around the in-custody death of Elias Whitehead, who is being remembered by his family and loved-ones as a great man and loving partner. Morgan Modjeski reports.

The IIU says investigators are looking to speak to a potential witness to the incident, who was seen in video surveillance in the nearby area around the time of the death.

The IIU is asking the individual or anyone who may know the individual to come forward to talk to investigators. If anyone has any information they are asked to contact the IIU at 204-948-7000 or 1-844-667-6060.
