First all-female, LGBTQ owned brewery opens in Manitoba

A local Winnipeg watering hole in Good Neighbour Brewing Co. has won New Brewery of the Year for 2023 and its owners say the recognition will be a boon for the local pub. Kurt Black reports.

Since opening their doors in 2023, the owners of Good Neighbour Brewing have strived to offer an inclusive welcoming environment on top of the tasty creations they have on tap.

“We wanted to build a space that felt like our home and welcome people into our home, and it’s inspiring to see folks who are now regulars coming in,” said Morgan Wielgosz, the co-founder & brew master at Good Neighbour Brewing Co.

What started as a simple love for craft beer, has developed into a lifelong passion for Amber Sarraillon and Morgan Wielgosz. Since beginning as contract brewers, the two have created over 100 unique brews since moving into their brewhouse on Sherbrook Street, but not even they could’ve imagined their first year in their new home culminating with being recognized at the Canadian Brewers Awards

“We care about what we do a lot, and to be amongst peers and to be recognized was incredibly emotional because we put so much time into the business, and care and love so it was an incredible moment for us,” Sarraillon.

As the first all-female and LGBTQ-owned and operated brewery in Manitoba, Sarraillon, and Wielgosz take pride in hopefully inspiring people to enter the industry who might who may not have had a chance in the past.

“We do have a lot of interest from females, non-binary’s, marginalized folks who say yes we love what you are doing, we’re passionate about craft beer please can we come in and work for you, it’s like a safe welcoming space for folks to come in learn, ask questions and hangout and really embrace what craft is all about,” said Wielgosz.

Spending many years travelling the world exploring different brewing methods and flavour combinations, the pair enjoy fusing their experiences to create unique combinations, with the goal of both bringing new exciting flavours to their customers, while also having a brew for every palette.

“Our speciality is that we produce a wide range of styles, so everything from fruited sours to hazy IPA’s to Czech lagers so we try to have a huge portfolio so we can welcome a wide range of our neighbours to the space to really explore beer,” said Sarraillon.

Moving forward Sarrillion and Wielgosz aim to continue to brew more unique creations, while of course remaining a Good Neighbour to the West Broadway community.
