2nd suspect arrested after St. James shooting in November

By News Staff

Police say they have arrested a second suspect, who had fled to northern Manitoba, in connection with a fatal shooting in St. James last year.

Winnipeg police had already arrested and charged one suspect with second-degree murder in the Nov. 5, 2023, shooting death of Lawrence Evan Pruden.

Officers say they received information this month that the second suspect, 21-year-old Bryce William Walker, was in northern Manitoba. A Canada-wide warrant for Walker was issued in November.

On Tuesday, members of the Manitoba Integrated Violent Offender Apprehension Unit (MIVOAU) and the RCMP’s Emergency Response Team arrested Walker at a home in Thompson, police say. He was turned over to Winnipeg police and has been detained in custody.

Last month, homicide police arrested and charged 23-year-old Nathaniel Gatehouse-Gilchrist with second-degree murder and attempted murder. He was detained in custody.

Winnipeg police say no further arrests are anticipated.

Police allege Pruden and a 30-year-old man were shot after leaving an establishment on Portage Avenue. They were taken to hospital in critical condition, where Pruden died of his injuries. Winnipeg police have yet to provide an update on the second victim’s health.
