Winnipeg fire crews battle 4 blazes in 12 hours

By News Staff

A vacant bungalow on Martin Avenue West is considered a complete loss after a fire early Sunday morning.

It was one of four blazes over a 12-hour period that Winnipeg fire crews needed to put out.

The WFPS was called shortly after 5 a.m. to the bungalow. Crews arrived to find flames and heavy smoke coming from the house.

Neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution as crews worked to prevent the flames from spreading.

No injuries were reported and the fire was declared under control around 6:30 a.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The building was scheduled to be demolished as the “structural integrity” was compromised.

The Martin Avenue West fire was the fourth one crews needed to battle in a short period of time.

Around 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, firefighters were called to a fire in a single-family bungalow on Kirkwall Crescent. The residents managed to leave the house on their own. There were no injuries reported.

Crews believe the fire was accidental, “caused through the use of hot tools in a home renovation project.”

At midnight, the WFPS was called to a detached garage fire fully engulfed in flames on Broadway. No injuries were reported. The garage is considered a total loss.

At 1 a.m., crews were called to a two-storey home on Remi Claeys Crescent. The residents evacuated before firefighters arrived. One person was assessed by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital in stable condition.
