Officer in hospital, man facing 10 charges after stolen vehicle incident: RCMP

Manitoba RCMP say an officer is in hospital and a man is facing 10 charges following a collision.

RCMP say around 11:55 p.m. on Dec. 29, officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on Highway 52, in Mitchell.

Responding officers learned the vehicle had been stolen and began patrols of the area to locate it, they say.

Around 1:05 a.m., officers received a second call informing them the vehicle was on Road 19N, in the RM of De Salaberry, just south of Winnipeg.

Officers from Steinbach and St-Pierre-Jolys responded and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled, before colliding head-on with a marked police vehicle.

Following the collision, the driver was taken into custody and taken to hospital as a precaution.

The officer was also taken to the hospital after suffering non-life-threatening injuries.

Mounties say they conducted a search of the vehicle following the collision and found a loaded rifle, an imitation handgun, and prescription drugs.

A 30-year-old man from Grunthal is facing multiple charges including assault on a peace officer with a weapon, dangerous driving causing harm and possession of property obtained by a crime.
