4 teenagers charged with manslaughter in fatal Winnipeg stabbing

Winnipeg police say four teenage boys aged 14 to 16 were charged with manslaughter in connection with the fatal stabbing of a man in West Alexander last month.

Police found the victim, 27-year-old Peter Filip, injured on the sidewalk at Arlington Street near Logan Avenue in the early hours of Nov. 11. He was taken to hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.

The Winnipeg Police Service says homicide investigators arrested four teens between Dec. 11 and Dec. 20 – two 14-year-olds, a 15-year-old, and a 16-year-old. They were detained in custody.

Police are still searching for two other suspects: a 14-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy.

Investigators allege the victim was standing outside a vendor on Arlington Street around 2 a.m. when a group of suspects assaulted him.

One of the suspects produced a firearm – a sawed-off rifle – and struck the victim during the assault, WPS said in a news release. One of the suspects fatally stabbed him, they say.

Four of the suspects then approached three boys aged 14 to 16 at Logan Avenue and Tecumseh Street, assaulted them and stole their clothes at gunpoint, police allege. One of the victims was hospitalized with an upper-body injury.

Police say the same four suspects then asked a 28-year-old man for a ride near Salter Street and Burrows Avenue, got into his vehicle and assaulted him. One of the suspects tried shooting the man with the rifle, police say, but the gun misfired.

“The suspects unsuccessfully attempted to rob the victim of his vehicle; however, he was able to disarm one of the suspects of the firearm, retake control of his vehicle, and attend police headquarters for assistance,” WPS said.

More charges are expected, police anticipate.
