The world premiere of a new “Narnia” adaptation is hitting the stage in Winnipeg this December.
Starting Friday, families are invited to “step through the wardrobe” and watch the musical based on the popular books by C.S. Lewis.
Some of the 18 performances at the Manitoba Theatre for Young People (MTYP) area already sold out.
“You will come to the show and really recognize the book that you know, the most famous first novel in the series, but it has been expanded and changed to suit some themes we really wanted to bring forward about found family, and about the changing seasons of our lives,” said Fiona Sauder, the artist director of Bad Hats Theatre — which is working with MTYP on the production.
Bad Hats Theatre previously adapted works such as “Peter Pan” and “Alice in Wonderland”, of which “Narnia” will be its third show and finale of its musical works.
The Narnia musical will run from Dec. 1-23, with tickets starting at $23.
“This is a piece that is meant to be seen by multiple generations,” said Sauder. “At its core, it is about the beauty of intergenerational relationships and those people that introduce us to magic, and open the doors to curiosity and wonder that is allowed to be with us throughout our lives, not just when we’re children.”
For one show only — Dec. 10 at 4 p.m. — there will be an ASL-interpreted performance of the musical.
