Team Beth Peterson excited to represent Manitoba in women’s curling championships

After falling short in the finals of the last two Manitoba women’s curling championships, Team Beth Peterson is finally getting their shot at the national stage, soon heading to the Scotties as Team Manitoba.
“It was overwhelming emotionally for me to be honest. Ya know, losing the finals the last two seasons was a lot,” said Peterson. “Every day, one of us sends a text in the group and says I can’t believe we’re still going.”
Katherine Remillard, the team’s second, added, “I’m just so excited. I can’t believe this is happening. That we’re going to be wearing the buffalo on our backs, it’s just a dream come true.”
Team Petterson’s victory comes on the heels of a 2024 finals rematch versus Kaitlyn Lawes-Heather’s squad. Team Peterson won by a final score of 9-7, but what stands out the most about this group is their identity as young moms.
“Obviously, we all had babies in the same year, and it’s been great. Mat leave has been great for curling. We get to practice whatever time we want during the day as long as our babies allow us to,” said Remillard.
The team’s lead, Melissa Gordon-Kurz, added, “It’s nice to know that if my kid doesn’t sleep one night, maybe their kid didn’t sleep one night either. And then we can all bond over the same things and have the same shared experiences.”
While skip, Kelsey Calvert, said, “To be able to show them that hard work can pay off and you can be a good mom and a good athlete is something that we all really prioritize.”
With the Scotties just a few weeks away, the nerves are starting to kick in for Calvert.
“I’m definitely nervous. It means something to me. So, of course, I’m going to be a little bit nervous. But I’m excited. I think we’ve worked really hard all year, and I think if we play how we played at the Manitoba provincials, that we’ll have a chance to put ourselves in a good spot,” said Calvert.
Team Peterson will now head down to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, which kicks off on January 23, in Mississauga, Ontario.
