Stolen vehicle, foot chase lead to firearm seizure in Winnipeg

Winnipeg police arrested a man and seized a prohibited firearm following a stolen vehicle investigation and foot pursuit late Thursday night.

Around 10:40 p.m., officers were patrolling the Talbot neighbourhood when they spotted a vehicle speeding northbound on Gateway Road. Police followed at a safe distance as the vehicle attempted to evade officers.

Additional units were called in, and the vehicle was eventually stopped near Molson Street and Norwich Ave. The driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot but was taken into custody after a brief chase.

Police confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen. A semi-automatic carbine rifle with a loaded magazine was found inside.

Kyle Andrew Cathro, 37, has been charged with multiple firearms-related offences, including unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm with a tampered serial number, careless storage of a firearm, possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon contrary to a prohibition order, and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
