Brandon man charged with assault after locking himself within Winnipeg store

Winnipeg police have charged a man from Brandon, Manitoba in connection to a recent assault.

WPS says on Thursday morning, officers responded to a report of a man armed with a knife within a store on Main Street.

While on their way to the scene, they learned a “distressed adult male suspect had attempted to stab an employee” and that he was still inside the store.

In addition, police say they learned that four employees had locked themselves in a separate room in the store.

By the time officers arrived, they found the man who was “uncooperative and non-compliant” and was in the lobby of the store.

Police say the man had reportedly locked the front door and refused to comply with officers when he was asked to drop the knife.

As officers tried to enter the store, the man reportedly began to harm himself.

Officers were able to gain entry, which is when the man used a fire extinguisher against the officers. Following this the officers used capsaicin (OC) spray and a taser, in an attempt to take the suspect into custody.

The man was taken to a hospital to receive treatment for his self-inflicted injuries.

Police also note that animals within the building at the time of the incident were evacuated due to the OC spray and the fire extinguisher being discharged.

Since, the man has been charged with three counts of assault with a weapon, assault of a peace officer, resisting a peace officer, and mischief under $5,000.
