Outgoing Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson wins Winnipeg seat

It’s been a couple of days since the Manitoba provincial election, but Elections Manitoba says the outgoing Premier Heather Stefanson has unofficially won her seat.

Stefanson narrowly hung onto her seat in the riding of Tuxedo, which she has held since 2000.

On Tuesday as election results were pouring in, Stefanson announced she was stepping down as leader of the Progressive Conservative party.

“Tonight I stand before you feeling honoured to have served as your premier,” said Stefanson during her concession speech to supporters on Tuesday. “Together we have been able to accomplish so much in just under two years. We have faced unprecedented challenges including a global pandemic, the unjust war in Ukraine, and challenging economic times.”

As of Thursday’s counting, Stefanson managed to take just over 40 per cent of the votes in her riding. NDP’s Lariss Ashdown managed 37.3 per cent, equating to a 263 total vote difference between the two.
