Manitoba Liberal Leader Dougald Lamont loses seat, steps down

Dougald Lamont announced he’s stepping down as Manitoba Liberal leader after losing his seat.

Lamont lost in St. Boniface to NDP candidate Robert Loiselle.

“I always knew this as a possibility,” Lamont said. “But we had to hope beyond hope, and keep working and do everything we could to run the best possible campaign. We did. We could and we did. And I’m incredibly proud of that.

“I’ve worked a lot of hard campaigns. This was one of the hardest.”

MORE MANITOBA ELECTION NIGHT:

The Liberals held three of the 57 legislature seats when the election was called. They managed to hold onto just one Tuesday.

Cindy Lamoureux, who has held the riding of Tyndall Park since 2016, was re-elected.

The Liberals lost the long-held River Heights riding under Jon Gerrard, who was defeated by the NDP’s Mike Morroz.

“I’m very, very proud of the things we did accomplish,” Lamont told CityNews shortly after stepping down. “I know we helped all sorts of people, especially during the pandemic, to make sure people didn’t get kicked out of their apartments or houses.

“And I’m very, very proud of the campaign we ran. We ran a campaign on principles, and true to our own principles.”

The Liberals heavily campaigned on creating more benefits for seniors, including establishing a minimum income for people over 60.

They also pledged to fund a search of the Prairie Green landfill for the remains of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran on a half-half basis with the federal government.
