No charges will be laid in fatal officer-involved shooting during December traffic stop

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) says On Dec. 3, 2022, they were notified by the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) of a shooting.

According to the WPS report, around 7:30 p.m., officers attended a home of a person who had outstanding warrants, to take them into custody.

When officers arrived at the home, they watched the man drive away in a BMW.

Officers then conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Bourkevale Drive and Portage Avenue.

During the stop, police say the man did not follow verbal commands from the officer. The encounter reportedly led to an officer firing their service weapon, which hit the man. He was then taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
