Driver in fatal hit-and-run in St. Vital was impaired, police say

By News Staff

Police allege a 25-year-old Winnipeg man was impaired when he fatally struck a woman in St. Vital Tuesday night before fleeing the scene.

The Winnipeg Police Service says an Audi A4 was speeding on Fermor Avenue around 8:30 p.m. when it burned a red light at St. Mary’s Road.

Police say the car narrowly missed other motorists before fatally striking a woman who was crossing the street. The driver reportedly fled the scene.

WPS says officers located the suspect and vehicle in Saint-Boniface on Beaverhill Boulevard.

Kevin Mark Lavallee was arrested and charged with multiple offences, including operation of a vehicle causing death while impaired, failure to stop at the scene of an accident and driving without a valid licence.

The WPS traffic division is investigating.
