By News Staff

Winnipeg police say a live improvised explosive device (IED) that posed a danger to public safety was found during a homicide investigation Friday.

The Winnipeg Police Service says officers were at an apartment building on Mulvey Avenue near Hugo Street N investigating a previously released homicide around 5:45 p.m.

WPS says officers located a suspicious item. The building was evacuated and members of the bomb unit were notified.

“After further assessing the IED, it was determined to be live and presented a public safety risk. The IED was safely disrupted, and no injuries occurred with the assistance of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service,” police said in a news release.

On Friday police identified the victim of an alleged shooting at the Mulvey Avenue apartment building as 46-year-old Damion Wayne Skrumeda.

Members of the WPS homicide unit are continuing to investigate.
