Canadian Football League fines four teams

By The Canadian Press

The Canadian Football League fined the Montreal Alouettes and three other teams on Friday.

The CFL said in a news release that the Alouettes, Ottawa Red and Black, Toronto Argonauts and Winnipeg Blue Bombers had all exceeded the 2022 salary cap of $5.35 million Canadian.

The league said the four teams exceeded the cap by less than $100,000 and were fined $1 for every $1 spent over the cap.

A CFL team could have lost one first-round draft pick if it had exceeded the cap by between $100,000 and $299,999.99 and two first-round picks for spending $300,000 or more.

The order of the CFL draft, scheduled for May 2, will therefore remain unchanged. The Alouettes hold the fifth and seventh overall picks in the first round.

The Alouettes were fined $794, the lowest of the four teams penalized. The Blue Bombers were the most penalized under a $64,499 fine.

“The payroll system monitoring and verification process includes a detailed audit conducted with all nine clubs at the end of the season. Teams are required to provide regular updates on the level of compensation paid after six games, after 12 games and after 18 games,” the Canadian Tour release stated.

The salary cap for the 2023 season was set at $5.45 million.
