Winnipeg man facing 13 charges after vehicle theft

A Winnipeg man is facing 13 charges in connection to a vehicle theft over the weekend.

WPS say on April 23, officers noticed a Chevrolet Silverado 2500 that was known to be a stolen vehicle being driven by a man in the north end of the city.

Officers along with a K9 Unit tailed the suspect. While the suspect was being followed, police say they did lose visual contact before relocating the vehicle along McPhillips Street.

“As the vehicle reached Fort Street and Broadway Avenue, the suspect rammed a TST vehicle rendering it inoperable,” said Winnipeg police in a statement.

WPS say with the assistance of RCMP from Headingly, took over the pursuit of the suspect, before the suspect lost control of the vehicle in a ditch west of Portage-La-Prairie.

The suspect was taken to hospital to be treated for injuries suffered in the collision, before being taken into custody by RCMP.

RCMP noted at the time of the arrest, the suspect provided a false name to officers.

The suspect, a 31-year-old from Winnipeg, has since been turned over to Winnipeg police, and has been charged with assault of a peace officer, dangerous operation of a vehicle, identity theft and several other charges.

Both officers that were involved in the collision in the earlier stages of the pursuit were taken to hospital and were assessed for minor injuries.

Winnipeg police are continuing to investigate. Anyone with any information is asked to contact investigators at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
