Fire at vacant home on William Avenue: WFPS

By News Staff

One person is recovering after a fire in an apartment in the Murray Industrial Park area – one of two blazes in the city Friday night into Saturday.

The first overnight fire was at a vacant house downtown, on William Avenue near Isabel Street.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) says it was called before 11 p.m., with the call coming from a WPS unit that noticed smoke coming from the house.

Crews declared the fire under control at 12:45 a.m.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

It’s the latest blaze at a vacant Winnipeg home. Two vacant North End duplexes caught fire last week and were deemed a complete loss.

The string of vacant fires has sparked questions surrounding a city bylaw change that was supposed to pass the cost of fire fighting onto the home owner.

Apartment fire on Quail Ridge Road

Shortly after midnight Saturday, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in an apartment in on Quail Ridge Road.

Crews arrived to find the fire already extinguished.

Paramedics treated one person and transported them to hospital.

The WPFS believes the cause of the fire is accidental and related to a small appliance.
