Manitoba man charged for uttering threats towards government officials

RCMP in Russell, Manitoba have charged a 42-year-old man in connection with online threats made towards law enforcement personnel, government officials and medical professionals.

RCMP say on Jan. 11, they received a tip from the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), saying “an online social media account, associated to a resident of Russell, had uttered threatening comments via various social media platforms.”

RCMP say an investigation was able to quickly determine who the accounts belonged to and where they originated from.

On Jan. 12, “officers contacted an adult at his residence and attempted to have the accused turn himself in. When this effort failed, officers attended to the home.”

When officers arrived, they knocked on the door. The 42-year-old man answered and was told he was under arrest for uttering threats. At that point, police say he became combative and resisted being taken into custody.

While the suspect was fighting the officers, one of his dogs bit one of the officers on the leg. The officer only suffered a superficial injury.

The 42-year-old will be making a court appearance Monday in Brandon, facing charges of uttering threats, resisting arrest, and four counts of assaulting a police officer.
