Manitoba RCMP charge 9th teen in connection to violent October party

RCMP in Manitoba have charged a 15-year-old from Winnipeg in connection to a violent incident in East St. Paul in late October.

Red River North RCMP say on Oct. 29, officers were called to a home after numerous reports of a large party that was serving alcohol to minors.

When Mounties arrived, they were allegedly swarmed by 70 teens.

“Multiple youth jumped on two RCMP vehicles and proceeded to kick in a windshield on one vehicle and the other suffered major damage to the roof and hood,” said RCMP in a statement.

“As the incident unfolded, it became apparent there were far more youth in attendance than the initial amount that swarmed the police vehicles. Officers estimate there were several hundred party-goers present during the incident.”

Officers from Selkirk, Oakbank, Central Traffic Services, Police Dog Services, Winnipeg Police Service Canine Units and General Patrol officers were called in to assist in the matter.

“Some of the youth at this party were in vulnerable states and clearly in danger, yet many in attendance were preventing our officers from doing their jobs. We are very concerned that there may be more victims of crime that night,” said S/Sgt Kyle McFadyen of the Selkirk RCMP in a statement on Oct. 31. “We are asking anyone who may be a victim or who may have been a witness to a crime to contact us immediately.”

Officers reportedly noticed one intoxicated teenage girl, who was dragged into a bush by two teenage boys who allegedly attempted to sexually assault her. Police say both the boys fled when officers intervened and the girl was later taken to the hospital.

During the incident, racial slurs were also shouted out at some of the officers. “Officers were spat on, and had fireworks launched at them and their police vehicles,” said the RCMP.

“What occurred on Saturday and what our officers faced is unacceptable. The level of violence and the racist language directed at responding police officers is beyond disturbing. Be assured that we are reviewing video and audio captured by our police vehicles as well as the videos posted to social media. We will hold people accountable for their actions,” said Superintendent John Duff, East District Commander, Manitoba RCMP.

Since then, eight other teens between the age of 15 and 18, three from Winnipeg and one from East St. Paul, have been charged with mischief. All five are expected to appear in court on Mar. 7, 2023.

RCMP also noted at the time of the incident, the homeowner was out of province.

If anyone has any additional information, they are asked to contact Red River North RCMP at 204-482-1222 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
