EDITOR’S NOTE: The Winnipeg Police Service initially indicated the grenade was “live.” They later determined it was “non-viable.”

Winnipeg police say the bomb unit needed to be deployed early Monday morning after a man was found carrying a grenade in the Weston neighbourhood.

Police say officers observed a man walking down a back lane around 1 a.m.

Officers suspected he was armed because he displayed characteristics of having an object protruding from his waistband.

Police say they took him into custody and found a grenade, a blade and sheath concealed in his clothing.

“The area was cordoned off for safety precautions,” the Winnipeg Police Service said in a statement. “The Bomb Unit arrived and the grenade was extracted.”

Police initially said the bomb unit determined the grenade was “live.” Police later said it only appeared to be live, but was determined to be “non-viable.”

The suspect – a 35-year-old – is facing multiple charges including possession of a weapon and carrying a concealed weapon prohibited device or ammunition.

He was detained in custody.
