Winnipeg sees rise in sextortion scams

Winnipeg police say the city has seen an increase in reports involving “Sextortion Scams.”

Police say the scam usually sees a suspect contact someone on social media as an “enticing individual who is young, attractive, or has similar interests.” The suspect will then build an online relationship with the victim, building it and encouraging the victim to send explicit photos.

Once images are shared, the sextortionist threatens to expose the victim by making the images or videos public, unless the victim pays with either payments of money transfers, gift cards, or sexual services.

Winnipeg police and the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (C3P) is cautioning everyone of all ages to not share intimate images with anyone.

Additionally, if you or someone you know has received sextortion threats, help is available at 204-986-6222, or online at need help now or cyber tip.
