Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened on August 27.
The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) says the incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Saturday when officers were conducting a traffic stop at Portage Avenue and Empress Street.
Reports say a 2021 Chevrolet Camaro SS, didn’t to slow or stop for police and ignored directions given by officers.
The driver of the Camaro fled the area and was monitored by the Winnipeg police Air1 helicopter.
“Two single-occupied WPS cruisers attended to the residence of the registered owner of the subject vehicle as it pulled into the rear of the residence at approximately 2:12 a.m. The male driver of the subject vehicle stopped, retrieved a weapon, and advanced on foot towards the WPS officers,” read a statement released by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU).
“The WPS officers discharged their respective service firearms, striking the male several times. Medical attention was immediately provided and the male was conveyed to Health Sciences Centre, where he succumbed to his injuries.”
The IIU says it was notified of the shooting almost immediately after it occurred and an investigation began.
If anyone has any information regarding the shooting, they are asked to contact the IIU at 1-844-667-6060.
