Doctors Manitoba concerned about health network in rural, northern areas

Doctors Manitoba is having serious concerns about the stability of health care in the province’s rural and northern areas.

BACKGROUND: Emergency room closures in rural Manitoba a growing concern after patient dies being turned away

The group is warning hospitals could have more emergency room closures or reduced hours.

Doctors Manitoba says there are 68 hospitals and health centres in those regions, but only 40 per cent are expected to remain open 24/7. And of those health-care facilities, 34 per cent are open part-time.

Eighteen of the 68 ERs have been closed for more than a year and are not expected to reopen this summer.

Doctors Manitoba is launching a new website called RuralCare.ca to help Manitobans impacted by those closures.

The group is expected to update the site weekly over the summer.
