Tornado watches issued for southwestern Manitoba Sunday

Tornado watches have been issued for multiple regions of southwestern Manitoba on Sunday.

Dauphin, Minnedosa and Virden are among the municipalities under Environment Canada’s latest weather watch for the province.

Severe thunderstorms are being forecast along the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border for the afternoon.

Canada’s weather authority says strong winds, heavy rain and large hail could accompany severe thunderstorms.

That has the potential to produce tornadoes, Environment Canada warns.

It is being described as a “dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation.”

The areas under tornado watch are:

  • Dauphin – Russell – Roblin – Winnipegosis
  • Melita – Boissevain – Turtle Mountain Provincial Park
  • Minnedosa – Riding Mountain National Park
  • Swan River – Duck Mountain – Porcupine Provincial Forest
  • Virden – Souris

Meanwhile large swathes of southern Manitoba are under heat warnings Sunday.

The Manitoba Marathon was cancelled 90 minutes after getting underway because of extreme heat.
