Teen charged with armed robbery after carjacking

A 16-year-old has been charged following a carjacking in Winnipeg on Friday.

Police say it happened in the afternoon, a woman was leaving the St. John’s neighbourhood library with her baby when two men attempted to steal her purse.

During the struggle, the woman was dragged and the baby stroller containing her child was knocked over.

Witnesses that tried to intervene and help the woman told police the men pointed a firearm at them before driving off in the vehicle belonging to the woman.

WPS added when officers arrived, the woman said she did not require medical assistance for herself or her baby.

On Saturday, a patrol unit spotted the stolen vehicle near Salter Street and Powers Street and attempted a traffic stop. As the vehicle was being pulled over, one of the individuals inside jumped out and tried running from the officers.

The teen was apprehended by police and charged with armed robbery, possession of a firearm and operation of a conveyance while prohibited by order under the criminal code.

Police added the other suspect has not been charged.
