Two teens charged after attempted robbery over long weekend

Two teens have been arrested following an attempted robbery over the weekend.

Winnipeg police say a while on patrol along Sargent Avenue and Spence Street, officers were flagged down by an individual claiming someone was being “jumped”.

When police arrived at the scene they noticed one of the teens assaulting a 39-year-old. The suspect noticed the officers and tried to run away.

“During the ensuing foot pursuit, the suspect produced an 18-inch sai-style weapon. He later discarded it but was uncooperative, and a conducted energy weapon (“Taser”) was used to take him into custody safely. The suspect was later treated for minor injuries sustained during the confrontation, and the weapon was recovered.” said Winnipeg police in a statement.

WPS added a second teen tried to escape the scene on a bike that was stolen from the 39-year-old but was caught near Balmoral Street and Cumberland Avenue.

One 16-year-old was charged with robbery, possession of a weapon, and carrying a concealed weapon. Police have since released the teen but they are expected to appear in court.

The other person, another 16-year-old, was charged with robbery, possession of property obtained by a crime, and failing to comply. They remain in custody.
